Hitchcock presents Daniels Brenner's mom Lydia and Suzanne Pleshette as his former lover Annie before any events take place. The suspense is increased due to Hitchcock spending time to establish the relationship between the two characters. Evan Hunter (better known as Ed McBain) adapted the screenplay from the Daphne Du Maurier novella. Hitchcock employed electronic sound effects instead of music scores with great impact. An unusual real-life assault by herringwaters that smoked on Capitola, Calif., in the year 1961, thought to be the result of diatom poisoning of the anchovies eaten by the birds, causing extreme aggressiveness, was researched by Hitchcock to prepare for his film.
