Whitney Elizabeth Houston is a performer who was born in Newark, New Jersey on the 9th of August, 1963. Their parents include gospel superstars Cissy Houston(n e Emily Lee Drinkard), and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne warwick also sings. At the age of a small girl, Houston started singing professionally with the church choir. Houston sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khosns 1978 single Im Every Woman with her mother. In 1981, she worked as a fashion model and appeared on the Seventeen Cover. She also provided backing vocals to Lou Rawls and Jermaine. The singer was first a featured vocalist for the New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her quality of vocal work earned her the attention of major record label Arista which she joined in 1983. The year 1985 saw Whitney Houston's first album became one of the most successful debut albums ever. Many hit songs, including The Greatest Love of All, Saving My Love For You How Can I Tell You If That You Love Me as well as The Greatest Love of All were released on the album. They set her up to smash the Beatles record with seven consecutive US top 10s. The album sold 3 million copies during its first year in the US and then went on to achieve a worldwide sales of 25 million, earning her the first of her six Grammies. The Whitney album from 1987, that featured songs like I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Where Do Broken Hearts Get to and continued to be a huge success. However, it came with The Bodyguard of 1992 that made her one of the biggest-selling musicians in recent history. The film itself as well as the performances on screen were not widely praised the soundtrack album and her version to the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You made charts for albums and singles for months and sold 44 million copies around the world. In the same year, she got married to former New Edition star Bobby Brown with whom she has a single child Bobbi Kristina Brown in March 1993. In the same year, her drug abuse was well-documented and she was able to use it regularly in 1996.
